Tāne Te Waiora
The Tāne Te Waiora programme is a safe space for our tāne to reconnect with their whanau, hapu, iwi and their own ira atua through karakia, mihimihi, waiata, pepeha and whakapapa.
Utilising pūrākau to help navigate our tāne through domestic violence, drug addiction, anger management and trauma – our programme offers an ao Māori worldview on reconnection and realising our mana motuhake.
Mana Wahine
The Mana Wahine programme at Waitomo Papakainga offers a safe and empowering space grounded in Te Ao Māori, dedicated to women facing challenges such as domestic violence, trauma, substance abuse, and justice-related issues.
Through mahi toi, including raranga, whakairo and Rongoā Māori, our programme provides a holistic pathway to personal growth, healing, and cultural reconnection.
Embracing the teachings of purakau, karakia, mihimihi, waiata, tikanga Māori, and whakapapa, we support wahine in their journey towards well-being and self-discovery.
We encourage wahine to draw strength from their personal experiences and the wisdom of atua Māori, fostering a space for healing through whanaungatanga.
Guided by values like Tika, Pono, Aroha, and Whanaungatanga, we create a nurturing environment for every wahine to heal and thrive.
Kaitiaki Whānau
Waitomo Papakainga brings forth the teachings of our tūpuna so that our tamariki/mokopuna stand resolute in their tino rangatiratanga. We provide care services for tamariki/mokopuna and rangatahi in the care of Oranga Tamariki, who whakapapa to Te Hiku o Te Ika and the wider Te Tai Tokerau.
We aim to return all tamariki/mokopuna to the care of their own whakapapa and will advocate for a whanau led outcome.
We are also responsible for the recruitment of Kaitiaki Whānau and will support those Kaitiaki Wahanu, as well as all tamariki/mokopuna and rangatahi allocated into their care.
Te Hiku Pataka
Te Hiku Pataka is the only social supermarket serving Te Hiku o Te Ika and the demand increases every day. With the rising costs of living, we continue to support whanau by bringing forth the teachings of our tūpuna to share kōrero, share kai and overall, to share the load.
Te Hiku Pataka aims to create a dignified experience for all whanau entering our social supermarket. Each person is given exclusive access to the Pataka to ensure that their mana is intact and to safeguard their integrity throughout the whole process.
Ultimately, the point of difference for the Te Hiku Pataka is that this is a lifestyle for us, and it is an honour to serve our whanau of Te Hiku o Te Ika. It is a holistic approach to the traditional foodbank approach, and we welcome everyone like they are our own whanau. We love what we do.
Justice Team
The Waitomo Papakāinga Justice Team provide support across Family Court, Youth Court and the District Court proceedings. We support whānau navigating through difficult Court processes and assist in identifying key contacts, including lawyers, Court Staff, Police, Oranga Tamariki, Ministry of Social Development, Social Workers, and Corrections Officers. Our Justice Team will also pull together whānau hui and help with the preparation of whanau safety plans.
In addition to this, Waitomo Papakāinga will advocate for our whānau and will support with:
Supported Bail;
Supervision with Activity;
Community programmes;
Supervised Access Visits – Court ordered, Oranga Tamariki arranged or whānau referrals.
Social Work and Assistance for whānau at Risk
Our Social Service support for whānau is guided by Te Ao Māori principles and practices. It is a whānau-based Kaupapa navigated by and for the communities we serve. With a focus on early intervention that enhances Mana Motuhake of all whānau engagements.
At Waitomo Papakāinga, whanaungatanga is fundamental to the mahi we do with whānau. Establishing whakapapa connections through kaupapa and wānanga allows us to engage in a more meaningful way with our Te Hiku o Te Ika whānau. Ensuring the voices of tamariki and whānau are at the forefront of developing achievable and sustainable change for whānau to thrive.
Using values of Tika, Aroha and Pono we provide a safe space for whānau to share their haerenga and acknowledge and accept accountability for change to happen. We believe whānau have the capacity to determine for themselves what change looks like for them and initiate that change utilising matauranga acquired and shared on our kaupapa.
Emergency and Transitional Housing
Through our Community Housing, we focus on providing Social and Affordable Housing to whānau within Te Hiku o Te Ika, helping to create stable and secure living environments. We are committed to supporting you to achieve affordable housing options throughout your stay with us.
Emergency Housing Criteria:
Single mother or couple with tamariki;
MSD Referral form;
Commit to:
working alongside our Whānau Team;
working towards affordable housing solutions;
developing workable plans and achieving whānau goals;
actively completing tasks.

16years – 24 years old;
Must be actively:
In full-time employment;
Actively seeking full-time employment;
Enrolled on a full-time course

Waitomo Papakāinga offers a range of Whānau Tautoko Services via our Whānau Team who will assess your needs and with your input, wrap tautoko around you. These may include, but not limited to:
1 on 1 or Relationship Whakawaatea;
Whānau Hui and/or FGC facilitation, hosting or mediation;
Advocacy with Oranga Tamariki, WINZ and other Government Agency;
Kuia and Kaumātua advisory support.
All of our teams at Waitomo Papakāinga together make up the Whānau Team. We provide tautoko across all of the services and will take a whakaaro Māori approach to find solutions in the best interests of the whanau. We work in collaboration with the goal of whanau, hapu and iwi achieving tino rangatiratanga and mana motuhake.
We invite whanau throughout Te Hiku o Te Ika to visit us. The first step to receiving any tautoko from Waitomo Papakāinga is walking through the front door – we’ll tautoko you with the rest.
